The Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area is located in the municipality of Villasimius in Sardinia and stretches over 34 km of coastline, from the western area of Capo Boi to the northern promontory of Punta Porceddus on the east coast. This protected area encompasses the islands of Cavoli, Serpentara, and Variglioni, along with Secche dei Berni, Secche di Mezzo and Libeccio, Secca di Santa Caterina, and Secca dei Pescatelli.

The Marine Protected Area – a historical nod

Let’s start with a curiosity: the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area takes its name from the promontory of the same name, Capo Carbonara, deriving from the ancient name of Villasimius, “Crabonaxa,” related to the use of wood for coal production. A deep connection to the history and identity of the region that makes this natural gem even more special.

The Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area (AMPCC), was established by a Decree of the Ministry of the Environment in 1998, later amended in 1999 and fully replaced in 2012. Occupying an area of about 14,360 hectares, the MPACC is positioned as the third largest marine area in Sardinia and is divided into four levels of protection: zone A (integral reserve), zone B (general reserve), zone C (partial reserve) and D (experimental reserve).

The territory of the MPACC extends from Cala Pisano to Punta Is Proceddus and includes the stretch of sea surrounding the islands of Serpentara and Cavoli. Numerous minor reefs, such as Congress, Proci, Santo Stefano, and Variglioni, along with several shoals such as Anchors, Berni, Dotti, Libeccio, Mezzo, Piscaddedus, and Santa Caterina, contribute to the diversity of this marine environment.

The fascinating rock formations on the beaches, extensive Posidonia oceanica meadows, and marine bioclastic sediments give Capo Carbonara a land and seascape of the highest environmental value.

The MPACC offers numerous beaches along its perimeter, with the Notteri pond wetland at its center, surrounded by some of the most varied and fascinating coastline in the Mediterranean.

In the underwater environment, unique shapes of granite rocks, pinnacles, depressions, clefts and tafoni can be seen, often enhanced by the vivid colors of sea daisies or gorgonians. Here, quiet populations of sizeable groupers, snappers and bream, along with schools of Mediterranean barracuda, patrol in search of food. Marine mammals include the coastal dolphin, bottlenose dolphins, and, in recent years, sightings of minke whales, sperm whales, common dolphins, and stenellas in the deeper waters of the Marine Protected Area.
